Keokuk is located on a scenic stretch of the historically-rich Mississippi River from whose hills one can stand and look into both Missouri and Illinois. Keokuk is located in the extreme southeast corner of Iowa at the intersections of U.S. Highways 218, 136, and 61 as well as the intersections of the Des Moines and Mississippi Rivers. The major portion of the city is located high on the bluffs overlooking Lake Keokuk which was formed in 1913 with the construction of the dam and hydro electric power plant and Lock #19.
