Grant Information

Grant Announcement: Carol M. White Physical Education Program Grant

This is a very exciting opportunity for the Keokuk schools and the timing couldn't be better with the community's and the school board's commitment to constructing a new weight room. We now have the equipment to expand the lifting, but also were able to secure equipment for aerobic fitness. The resources available as a result of this grant will significantly enhance the PE curriculum at all levels.

There is a the potential for subsequent funding depending on a number of factors.   If we are awarded the additional years, the district would get:   Year 2-$168,988 and Year 3-$105,182 plus an in-kind contribution.

A major component of the grant is professional development for teachers relating to the new equipment along with funds for curriculum development.   Additionally, the grant will fund a wide range of equipment such as:

Polar/Health First Package to monitor cardio-vascular fitness
Polar Heart monitors
New laptops for the PE teachers
PDAs (Personal digital assistants) for the PE teachers to collect data
Medicine balls
Indian Clubs
Dumb bell weights
Elementary playground equipment
Non-aerobic fitness equipment (weights) for HS weight room--$71,445
Aerobic fitness equipment for HS cardio-fitness center--$63,845
Elementary & MS fitness equipment--$15,000
MS aerobic fitness equipment--$23,000
Projection systems for elementaries, MS and HS
Portable speakers and sound systems for elementaries, MS and HS
General supplies--$8,205
Paper, phone, postage, copying

All K-12 physical education teachers will be involved in the grant through the new equipment and the professional development.   We will also provide training for the district's coaches on the new equipment.   Professional development will also be provided to staff supervising playground activities.

The purpose of this proposal is to increase student achievement and performance through healthy eating and physical activity.   Federal and in-kind contributions of time, talent and dollars will provide the staff development, curriculum and equipment to implement an action plan developed in response to our analysis of the School Health Index (CDC) and student fitness data.

All K-12 students will participate in the activities, but the primary focus will be on our secondary students.   Activities have been developed with input from students, educators, administrators, and health professionals.   Representatives of all stakeholders, especially students, will continue in an active role as the activities unfold over the grant period and beyond.

The goal: all students have the skills and knowledge to make healthy nutritional and activity decisions.   Our objectives and outcomes include decreasing the number of students considered overweight or underweight, increasing muscle endurance and flexibility, increasing cardiovascular health, increasing students' posture, and increasing regular physical activity.
